Furniture designer Tapio Anttila wins Finnish design prize

Design Forum Finland report on the 2018 Kaj Franck Design Prize

Design Forum Finland, together with the Finnish Fair Foundation, awards annually the Kaj Franck Design Prize, which is one of the biggest design prizes in Finland. It has been awarded since 1992; the list of the prizewinners equals the most prominent names of contemporary Finnish design. Its 27th receiver is interior architect, designer Tapio Anttila.

The prize jury appreciated Tapio Anttila’s strong and comprehensive furniture brand bearing his name and the confident and individual design idiom. The starting points of his work lie in practical and functional issues, as well as in the users’ needs. Anttila has also been able to develop a functioning design business in furniture, which is challenging as the Finnish market is not very large. At first, the Tapio Anttila Collection was created from compatible products designed for various companies and already in production; later it has been developed as an independent brand. Long experience and strong professional expertise combined with flexibility and the ability to find new opportunities have been Anttila’s fortes in his career.

During the years, Tapio Anttila has received several awards for his work, being the Furniture Designer of the Year, among other nominations. Quite recently, on Finland’s Independence Day 6 December, he received the Pro Finlandia Medal, a special honour of the Order of the Lion of Finland given to artists and writers since 1945.

The Kaj Franck Design Prize brings forth the central spirit and principles of designer Kaj Franck’s (1911–1989) oeuvre: high-quality, democratic and functional design that solves practical challenges and opens up new opportunities for companies excelling in design. A particular merit is if the rewarded designer brings beauty and joy to everyday life and enhances the quality of life. The prize sum, donated by the Finnish Fair Foundation, is 10,000 euros. The recipient is chosen by a prize jury and the prize is awarded on the basis of the whole oeuvre of the designer or team.
