Joseph Binder Award 2018

“Colour and form are inseparable” – the motto of this year’s call for entries is borrowed from one of Joseph Binder’s quotes, which inspired the graphic designers of the studio Bruch–Idee&Form from Graz in their design for the visual appearance of JBA18.

The Joseph Binder Award (JBA) is an international competition with a focus on graphic design and illustration, which was first launched in 1996 by designaustria, the interest organisation and knowledge centre for design in Austria. It is named after one of the most outstanding graphic designers and illustrators active in Austria between the two World Wars, who subsequently also revolutionised visual communication in the United States.
Joseph Binder’s motto was: “In design, everything has a function. Design has a representational function. Design has a communicational function. Design has a motivational function.”

Graphic designers, illustrators, advertising agencies and students from all over the world are invited to enter their works produced in 2016 (or later) by 28 February 2018 (early bird) or 15 April 2018. The submissions will be judged in thirteen categories: Corporate Design, Communication Design, Information Design, Type Design, Poster Design, Editorial Design, Packaging Design, Screen Design, Book Illustration, Media Illustration, Commercial Illustration, Illustration in Miscellaneous Applications und Design Fiction (unpublished works, independent/non-commercial projects, unrealised concepts, student projects, etc. in all disciplines).

Award & Ceremony
In each category, a Joseph Binder Award in gold, silver, and bronze will be awarded in the form of trophies: the ball of crumpled paper encased in glass is a symbol for the creative process. In order to support independent, conceptual, scientific, and non-commercial activities in the fields of graphic design and illustration, cash prizes in the amount of 6,000 € will be awarded in the Design Fiction category, in addition to the trophies.

The winners will be publicly announced on 8 November 2018 in festive presentation at designforum Wien in Vienna. On the occasion of the award ceremony, a catalogue will be presented, containing all of the selected and prize-winning entries as well as introducing the members of the jury. Furthermore, the award-winning projects will be displayed in an exhibition at designforum Wien for several weeks and afterwards as a travelling exhibition in other European cities.
