Fennia Prize Grand Prix announced

Design Forum FinlandDesign Forum Finland share the results of the Fennia Prize 2017, won this year by the Merivaara Corporation.

Design is part of the business operations of the most successful companies. The results of the Fennia Prize 2017 design competition, announced 19 January 2017, explicitly indicated that the use of design brings advantage in international success and helps create a strong and distinctive brand. The Fennia Prize Grand Prix of €10,000 was awarded to Merivaara Corporation, a company that has made use of design in its product development for several years.

The Fennia Prize is one of the most notable design competitions in Finland. It is organized by Design Forum Finland, Fennia Group, Elo and the Finnish Patent and Registration Office. In the competition companies and organizations are awarded for exemplary use of design in both designing and realizing products, services, business processes or concepts.

Merivaara Corporation, originally founded in 1901, provides operating-room systems and hospital furniture, exporting over 85% of its products. Fennia Prize Grand Prix was awarded for the Q-Flow™ Surgical Light. Several innovations of the light improve the level of hygiene in operating rooms and make the work of the personnel more effective. The prize jury stated that Merivaara's product development is based on multidisciplinary research and a thorough knowledge of the users. In the awarded surgical light, the combination of high technology and design provides definite benefits for users and competitive assets and distinctiveness for the corporation.

Five Fennia Prizes of €5,000 each went to Genelec Oy, known for its monitor loudspeakers, Naava which produces air-purifying smart green walls, Pentagon Design Oy for a liquorice concept for Fazer, Planmed Oy for a new mammography unit, and the start-up company Consair Oy for its clean air management unit for construction sites. Ten companies were awarded with an Honourable Mention: Fiskars Finland Oy Ab, INTO Concept Oy, Jukolux Oy, Konecranes Global Oy, LINK Design and Development Oy, Lojer Oy, Nuviz Oy, Pomarfin Oy, PUF Design Market, and Skanska Talonrakennus Oy.

The Finnish Patent and Registration Office gave out the IPR Excellence prize for the commendable protection of intellectual property rights to Lojer Oy and Secto Design Oy.

The aim of the Fennia Prize competition, arranged every second year, is to promote the use of design to enhance growth, competitiveness and internationalization. The competition was now arranged for the 13th time. The exhibition was on show in Helsinki 20 January–12 February and continues to Rovaniemi 23 February–15 March.
