European project Grandma’s Design kicks off

The European project ‘Grandma’s Design: revisiting Europe’s Baking Heritage’ kicked off flavourfully in Brussels on November 20th. Over 50 designers, food bloggers and others with a passion for food culture got a taste of the basic principles of Food Design in a workshop organized by European Design Centre, one of the project partners.
Grandma’s Design: Revisiting Europe’s Baking Heritage brings together grandmas and designers in the increasingly popular discipline of Food Design. With the help of the European Culture Program, the project aims to preserve the baking traditions across Europe; it also brings traditions back to life, as designers from across Europe are invited to take part in a competition that challenges them to prepare a Food Design concept. 75 grandmothers from Belgium, Finland, Italy, Turkey and the Netherlands have been filmed and interviewed while preparing a baking recipe that is of particular interest because of its heritage, “couleur locale”, tradition or specific story. All videos are visible at www.grandmasdesign.com and designers can choose their favourite recipe, grandma or (baking) story and get inspired to create a new (food) concept or product.
Food design workshop
A workshop at the Electrolux Experience Centre in Brussels introduced designers to the many possibilities of food design and the five categories of the competition: ‘Design About Food’, ‘Interior Design for Food’, Food Product Design’, ‘Design for Food’ and ‘Design with Food’.
Call for Designers
The Grandma’s Design competition is open to all professional designers. A professional jury will evaluate all applications and decide on the winners and honourable mentions in each category.

“red dot award: communication design 2012“ in Berlin Celebrating with the creative elite at the red dot gala and Designers’ Night
The “red dot award: communication design 2012“ honours innovative creative achievements – from posters and print campaigns to apps and TV spots. Thus, the competition documents the most important design trends in the PR and commercial industry. A distinction with the red dot guarantees worldwide attention and make sure that the brand is effectively associated with outstanding design quality.
The 15 international experts of the red dot jury assessed and evaluated every single work of the 6,823 entries from 43 countries – as always, live and on-site during the jury session in Essen, Germany. While doing so, they focused on criteria like recognition value & social relevance, effective target group reach or interface & aesthetics. Only the best designs were awarded: just 8% of all creative achievements submitted to the competition convinced the red dot jury.
