International Design Center Berlin (IDZ)

Our Vision:

The International Design Center Berlin (IDZ) is a non-profit association with the purpose of promoting the values of Design. IDZ is committed to the potentialities and qualities of design from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Our everyday world is the consequence of countless design processes. Designers have an intermediary role between products, companies and consumers. Design strategies strengthen businesses and help to bridge communication barriers in international markets. Finally, design is a vivid expression of our social culture, since good design is geared towards people. Design comprises more than aesthetics: design is a holistic and interdisciplinary process.

What we do:

Since its founding in 1968, IDZ has been a communications platform connecting business, society and culture, and is dedicated to current as well as future topics in design. Through projects, exhibitions and events, IDZ emphasizes various aspects of design. Social, economic and environmental as well as aesthetic considerations are all part of the effort to further the work of designers, as well as to increase design consciousness in consumers and in companies alike. As a center of design-expertise, IDZ offers knowledgeable consulting services and is an experienced partner in cooperative projects. Moreover, its member structure and international orientation offer a capable business network for the creative and design industries.

Our top 3 high profile projects:

German Federal Ecodesign Award
The environmental impacts of products and services are determined as early as in the design process. Ecodesign means more than energy efficient refrigerators or bags made from recycled materials. Indeed, ecodesign considers the entire life cycle of a product – from the extraction of raw materials to production, distribution and utilisation, all the way to recycling and disposal. Alongside issues of energy consumption and the responsible use of resources, the concept also addresses questions of user behaviour, durability and repairability.

In 2012, the Federal Environment Ministry and the Federal Environment Agency launched the Federal Ecodesign Award to bring the potential contribution of ecodesign to environmental protection more strongly into the public eye, as well as to encourage innovation in this area. The International Design Center Berlin, with the support of a project advisory board, has been commissioned with the development and implementation of the competition format. For companies as well as designers, the award provides a platform to showcase products and ideas of outstanding ecological and design quality.

Improving Design Business
IDZ runs the educational program “Design & Company” for the professionalization of designers. Workshops, lectures, seminars and excursions offer training for various skills in the broad field of designers practice. The programme adresses as well issues in successful entrepreneurship in design as methods for the stragic use of design as innovation factor for businesses.

Design as a strategic business tool:  BERLIN POLAND 2013-2014
